was a German philosopher. His central work Being and Time is widely known as one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Heideggers endeavor integrated his starting point, catholic theology (mainly influenced by Edmund Husserl) and phenomenological philosophy to which he turned after abandoning the field of theology. Heideggers personal approach can be characterized as a hermeneutical phenomenology. This means that he turns to the question of the sense of being. Heidegger influenced a great number of European philosophers such as Hannah Arendt, Hans Jonas, Michel Foucault or Hans Georg Gadamer. The current scientific and public controversy on Heidegger mainly tries to throw light on the role he played during the Nazi-Regime in Germany.
